When to Install Sod in North Texas

If you’re staring at a patchy, sun-scorched lawn and wondering when to install sod in Texas, you’re asking the right question at the right time. One of us started doing lawn care at 13, and after years of watching North Texas grass thrive (and fail), we’ve learned that timing matters just as much as the sod itself. Put fresh sod down in the wrong window and you’ll fight it all season. Get the timing right and it roots in fast, saves you water, and looks incredible for years.

The Short Answer: Spring and Fall Are Your Best Windows

For most DFW lawns, the sweet spot to install sod is mid-spring through early summer and again in early fall. During these stretches, soil temperatures are warm enough for roots to establish, but the brutal Texas heat hasn’t fully set in, or it’s finally backing off. New sod needs consistent moisture and a few weeks to knit into the soil before it faces real stress, so you want to hand it the friendliest conditions you can.

That said, the “best” month depends heavily on which grass you’re planting. North Texas lawns are mostly warm-season grasses, and each one has its own personality.

Timing by Grass Type

• Bermuda: Loves heat and sun. The ideal install window runs from April through July, once nighttime temps are reliably above 60¬∞F. Bermuda roots aggressively in warm soil, which makes late spring the gold standard for our clients in Frisco, McKinney and Allen.
• Zoysia: Slower to establish but worth the patience for its dense, carpet-like feel. Plant it from late spring into early summer so it has the full warm season to root before its first winter dormancy.
• St. Augustine: The go-to for shadier yards in older Dallas and Fort Worth neighborhoods. It’s the most cold-sensitive of the three, so aim for April through June and steer clear of any install close to a freeze event.

Why We Avoid Deep Summer and Hard Freezes

Can you lay sod in July or August? Yes, but it’s the toughest scenario. When the heat index climbs past 100¬∞F for days on end, fresh sod dries out faster than most homeowners can keep up with, especially under DFW watering restrictions. We’ve rescued plenty of mid-summer installs, but it takes disciplined watering and often costs you more on your water bill.

On the flip side, installing right before a winter freeze is a gamble. Warm-season grasses go dormant in cold weather and won’t root, leaving your investment sitting exposed. We generally close the fall window by mid-to-late October so the sod has time to settle before the first hard freeze rolls through North Texas.

Don’t Forget the Soil Underneath

Here’s something a lot of folks miss: when you install sod matters, but so does what’s under it. North Texas is famous for its heavy, clay-rich blackland soil. It holds water, compacts hard, and can suffocate new roots if you skip prep. Before we roll out a single piece of sod, we grade the yard for proper drainage, break up compacted clay, and lay down quality topsoil so roots have somewhere to go. Good prep in the right season is the whole ballgame, it’s why the same grass thrives in one yard and struggles next door.

A Few Local Tips From the Crew

• Water new sod early in the morning to beat evaporation and stay within local watering guidelines.
• Hold off on heavy foot traffic for two to three weeks while roots take hold.
• Wait until the sod is well established before that first mow, usually around two weeks, and never scalp it.
• If your HOA has turf standards, plan your install so the lawn looks its best during inspection season.
